. >> miguel marquez with the latest for us from los angeles. thank you. >>> fbi investigators are expected in libya today to investigate the attacks on the u.s. embassy. the u.s. ambassador and three other americans were killed. cnn intelligence correspondent suzanne kelly is following the developments for us from washington. what did the u.s. intelligence agencies know and when did they know it? >> it's great to look back now in retrospect and take a look at soom some of the clues that were there. one of the things they knew was that these groups were present in benghazi, they were well-organized, they have an infrastructure to them. they also knew of the presence of al qaeda sympathizers in the area, pockets of sympathizers. they also knew -- and we found this out from an intelligence source, there was an intelligence cable 48 hours before this attack took place that warned about the presence of this anti-muslim film on the internet. not only that, but that they had seen an up tick in the traffic visiting that site, that obviously this is a sign that this is gaining more popularity. cnn

in on the consulate attackers. >> reporter: a team of fbi investigators has arrived here in benghazi. they're gogt to now begin sifting through the rebel and ashes at the u.s. consulate to identify any clues or evidence that may help them in identifying who is behind the attack that killed the u.s. ambassador and three other americans. we also understand that the libyan government for their part is cooperating with the u.s. intelligence agencies and other agencies involved in the investigation. the libyan government believes that this was a preplanned attack, that this was not a spontaneous outburst of violence as some have suggested. so far they have four individuals in their custody. they say several more are under surveillance. they are trying to see whether these individuals have any important information that can benefit the american investigation. meanwhile, u.s. intelligence assets including unmanned aerial drones are keeping an eye above the skies of benghazi and eavesdropping on the people below to see if there's any communication that could also shed some light onto tuesday's attack. the

, what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning, kate. we understand that an fbi team of special agents has arrived here in benghazi. they're keeping a low profile for security reasons and are expected to at some point begin investigating what exactly happened at that consulate. they're going to sift through the ashes and look for any clues that can identify any individuals involved in that attack. we know that the u.s. military has deployed its resources, including drones and other intelligence gathering mechanisms to try to keep an eye and ear out for any of these people involved. they're getting a lot of cooperation from the libyan government. the libyan government says that they believe this was a pre-planned attack, not an outburst of spontaneous violence. and they're also saying that they have four individuals in custody that they are questioning who may have possibly important information that could benefit the americans. they also have several other individuals under surveillance. but as we've seen in the past, one of the more difficult things here on the ground is to actually m
